  13. UUNET's primary news server was down from 26 Jan 10:00 EST until
  14. 27 Jan 17:30 EST for emergency disc repair.  Though most feeds were
  15. largely inactive during this time, none should have lost any articles.

  17. Attempting to rebuild the normal production disc seemed to be working
  18. fine, but it started self-destructing during the second verification pass.
  19. We then tried our back up discs, but a firmware bug in one of them became
  20. evident during the restoration of the spool.  We finally moved  on to yet
  21. another set of discs and the restoration was eventually successful.

  23. We apologize for any inconvenience that may have been caused by UUNET's
  24. absence from the network news business for 32 hours.
