- MCNC's Center for Communications operates CONCERT, a statewide communications
- network that provides advanced communications services to enhance
- collaboration, education, and research in North Carolina and that links
- strategic information resources.

- NETWORKED SOFTWARE SYSTEMS DESIGNER (#529)
-
- The Communications research group at MCNC is involved in a variety of
- advanced networking tasks ranging from multimedia networking to gigabit
- communications. Most of these activities center around the use of TCP/IP
- and related protocols, and emerging broadband public network standards
- (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) and leading edge applications. Our programs
- emphasize experimental research and advanced engineering associated with
- supercomputer communications and tools for the support of remote
- collaboration (particularly video communications).

- The position will include becoming involved in one or more of these programs
- and take a leading role in defining the scope of activities for a work program
- including technical issues to be addressed, scheduling, defining milestones,
- required resources, execution, demonstration and support of the work program.
- Presentations to peers at technical conferences and workshops, and proposal
- preparation are expected. Interaction with academic researchers and industry
- for purposes of technology transfer and synergistic program collaboration is
- also required.

- Relevant technical experience includes: UNIX, C, C++, and working knowledge of
- internet protocols. Knowledge of ATM networking is desirable. Understanding
- and experience with supercomputer communications technologies are desirable.
- Communications/presentation skills are also necessary. Must have the ability
- to take a systems view of circumstances and develop a strategic plan for area
- of responsibility. Understand synergistic and leveraging aspect of current
- and pending projects. Identification of potential future directions and
- opportunities building on existing personal and group skill bases and the
- ability to self start and independently acquire technical knowledge are
- required skills.

- EDUCATION: BS in computer science or equivalent experience. Three years
- relevant work experience.

- NORTH CAROLINA SUPERCOMPUTING CENTER
-
- The North Carolina Supercomputing Center (NCSC) is a state-supported
- Supercomputing Center and Research Institute located in the Research
- Triangle Park, North Carolina. The NCSC program is national and
- international in scope as well as impact. NCSC promotes educational and
- research activities in high-performance computing and its applications in
- science, engineering and other disciplines. The Center works in close
- collaboration with universities and industry to engance the economic
- development of North Carolina and to support the national high-performance
- computing initiative.

- NCSC's computational environment includes a Cray Y-MP, running UNICOS,
- which began operation September 1989. The Center is accessible at high band
- width (T1/T3) by means of North Carolina's existing data communications network
- and is connected to the appropriate national networks.

- STUDENT SCIENTIFIC SUPPORT (#464)

- RESPONSIBILITIES: Write and edit printed and online user documentation
- such as newsletters, user manuals and catalogs. Research new ideas for the
- technical newsletter. Format documents according to style guidelines.
- Distribute user documentation and training videos.

- EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE: Experience with wordprocessing, desktop
- publishing and UNIX is preferred. Good writing/editing skills are required.
- Must posses a willingness to learn new software. Sophomore level or higher
- level preferred.
