- Just two nits, Janis - first, were you reading the Latin, or an English
- translation? This could be an artifact of the translation - although a
- good, honest translation would preserve the gender if the original Latin.
- I wouldn't be too surprised to find the feminine form used in the Latin,
- though.

- Second, this isn't the early church you're talking about, it's some
- 1,500 years later (I forget - was it 15th or 16th century?). At that
- point, the Church had achieved nearly complete hegemony in the spiritual
- realm over most of what passed for Western civilization at the time.

- Of course, this doesn't imply that the early Christian church didn't
- quickly become misogynist - just go back and read Paul or the "Desert
- Fathers".
