  20. Hmmm, I fancy I am a fairly sensible person. Try to convince me
  21. that you are a sensible person by explaining to me how
  22. Jabotinsky's words below are being misunderstood or misquoted.
  23. If Jabotinsky is not promoting a Jewish racial theory, then what
  24. is he doing?

  26. Nor was Jabotinsky chopped liver. He was the most influential
  27. ideological leader of the political movement of which Likud is
  28. the heir. Begin and Shamir, among others, are his ideological
  29. children:

  34.      It's interesting to recall, as well, that Jabotinsky located
  35.      his colonial impulse in the doctrine of the purity of blood.
  36.      Jabotinsky spelled this out in his "Letter on Autonomy:"

  38.      "It is impossible for a man to become assimilated with
  39.      people whose blood is different than his own.  In order to
  40.      become assimilated, he must change his body, he must become
  41.      one of them, in blood.  There can be no assimilation.  We
  42.      shall never allow such things as mixed marriage because the
  43.      preservation of national integrity is impossible except by
  44.      means of racial purity and for that purpose we shall have
  45.      this territory where our people will constitute the racially
  46.      pure inhabitants."

  48.      This theme was further elaborated by Jabotinsky:

  50.      "The source of national feeling ... lies in a man's blood
  51.      ... in his racio-physico type and in that alone.... A man's
  52.      spiritual outlook is primarily determined by his physical
  53.      structure.  For that reason we do not believe in spiritual
  54.      assimilation.  It is inconceivable, from the physical point
  55.      of view, that a Jew born to a family of pure Jewish blood
  56.      can become adapted to the spiritual outlook of a German or a
  57.      Frenchman.  He may be wholly imbued with that German fluid,
  58.      but the nucleus of his spiritual structure will always
  59.      remain Jewish."

  61.      The adoption of chauvinist doctrines of racial purity and
  62.      the logic of the blood were not confined to Jabotinsky or to
  63.      the revisionists.  The liberal philosopher, Martin Buber,
  64.      located his Zionism equally within the framework of European
  65.      racist doctrine:

  67.      "The deepest layers of our being are determined by blood;
  68.      our innermost thinking and our will are colored by it."

  70. Now, I can fully understand why a few emotional pro-Israelists
  71. here have to drown out any careful consideration of texts like
  72. these with shouts of "anti-Semitism." What else do they have to
  73. fall back on?
