  30.   This is interesting.  Where do you camp/who organizes the trips
  31.   you've been on?

  33.   BTW, just to make sure we're using terms consistently -- by
  34.   "camping" I'm referring to backpacking into the mountains
  35.   or wilderness, *NOT* "car camping" in which you drive to a
  36.   campsight.   That's a whole different set of demographics.

  38.   The group trips I've been on have either been organized through
  39.   the AMC (Appalachian Mountain Club) or involved friends I've
  40.   met in the AMC.   Around here (Boston area and southern New
  41.   Hampshire) it seems to attract mostly educated professionals,
  42.   or college students of both sexes.  Engineers, doctors, lawyers,
  43.   teachers, writers/editors, scientists, that sort of stuff.  
  44.   If I've had any complaint about the crowds I've met on AMC
  45.   trips run by the Boston and New York chapters it would be
  46.   that they are overly yuppified (lots of BMW's, SAABs, Volvo's, 
  47.   etc at the trail heads -- and high tech camping gear), and
  48.   overly politically liberal.   Some of them may be nerdy, 
  49.   but smelly or ignorant is something I've never seen.  My 
  50.   wife is active in the AMC Music Committee where they go up to 
  51.   AMC huts and play chamber music.  So I'm pretty sure we're
  52.   not talking about the same crowd.
