- Gene, what you want to know about is most likely the "Hinson-Hazelwood
- Act." See section 54.203 under Higher Education in the Texas State Laws.
-
- The "Hazelwood Act" is a loan program, very different than the
- "Hinson-Hazelwood" Act which is an outright grant.
-
- HHA basically pays the cost of *any* state provided courses, such
- as from the University of Texas, or Texas A&M universities. First
- off, you must have been a Texas resident when you joined the military
- to be eligible. If you're an undergrad, then you have to go through
- the formality of getting turned down for Federal aid to be eligible;
- (this "hoop" is *not* required for vet grads, who automatically get
- their schooling paid for under the HHA). And anyone getting VEAP
- isn't eligible till it runs out. Nor are active duty folks.
-
- I used it for several semesters and then went back to paying my own
- way, since it goes against my political and religious beliefs to
- take money from the state -- which is my own personal warp on the
- world. It made it real hard for me to criticize the Super Collider
- and all the Federal-Overspending -- so I quit taking it.
-
- It is certainly "free" money, and good deal if you need the help.
- Ask around at any state school, and you can eventually find the
- right people who know about it. Many of the folks involved with
- financial aid or veterans affairs don't know about the HHA though,
- and it definitely does not apply to private schools. Nor does it
- buy text books. It was worth about $500 a semester for a full load,
- more now.
-
- I'm pretty sure it works for continuing education courses and
- seminars provided by state schools as well.
-
- I don't think Texas law has changed in the past year or so
- regarding HHA. If you find it's been canxed, please let us know.
-
-
- The funny thing was I never heard about it while I was in the
- service, and in fact only stumbled on it talking to a couple of
- vets a couple of semesters after returning to school. I'd probably
- gotten out after my second hitch if I'd known about it -- and
- become a burrocrat or some such.
-
- G'luck all, enjoy it if you can.
