- You shouldn't confine yourself to the past tense. I once knew
- a grad student who was, well, definitely over 300 pounds. He
- won part of the New York State lottery and later used some of

- village, the women all began laughing and smiling. He asked what

- I can't entirely agree with that. People who dig ditches for a
- living *still* get plenty of exercise and (unless they are smart
- enough to use sunblock) tans.
-
- I dunno, I think Trygve may be onto something. There are really not
- many people any more who dig ditches for a living -- they're much more
- likely to make a living running a machine that digs ditches. (Think of
- the stereotype construction worker with the beer belly and pants sliding
- down over the crack in his butt.) Those who do, or who do things like
- carpentry, tend to be lean and tanned, and I've certainly heard a number
- of women make sighing noises about such people. But our stereotype now
- for rich people is "you can't be too rich or too thin" -- so maybe the
- stylish thing just happens to correspond with the body type of some
- people who aren't rich.
