  24. There was a great program on PBS the other night in the SFBay area about
  25. (among other things) marrying out of your racial/ethnic group in the US.
  26.  
  27. For European ethnicities such as Polish, Greek, Italian, the marrying rate
  28. out of the group is around 80-90%.  This rate exploded from 5-10% just after
  29. WWII.  For Hispanics and Asians, the marriage rates out of their groups are
  30. around 30%, also drastically up.  For Jews, the intermarriage rate is about
  31. 50%.

  33. For blacks, the rate is 2%.  This is also hugely up from an utterly
  34. negligible rate prior to WWII, but is clearly a different order of magnitude
  35. entirely from the other groups.

  37. These facts would seem to bear out the poster's statement above about
  38. Caucasian-Asian unions no longer appearing remarkable.

  40. The thesis of the program was that despite the recent concerns that the
  41. country is splitting apart along ethnic lines, the evidence is that
  42. the opposite is happening at an increasingly fast rate and in the most
  43. profound way:  intermarriage.  It's completely overwhelming even traditionally
  44. separatist ethnic groups---like the Jews.  One Jew was quoted on the program
  45. as saying that while Judaism has proved it can survive in the face of
  46. adversity, it does not seem to be able to survive near-complete acceptance.
  47. Rather ironic.  One of those "be careful of what you wish for" things.

  49. Just thought I'd throw a few semi-relevant facts around.  Hope I haven't
  50. trodden on anyone's preconceptions.
