  12. It may come as a shock to you that 1) I do not necessarily disagree
  13. with everything that Pat Robertson does, nor 2) do I necessarily agree
  14. with everything the initial poster stated.  Someone had asked for a translation
  15. of the .sig, and since I had recently re-read The Handmaid's Tale, I felt
  16. that the context of the .sig shed some important light on the mindset
  17. of the person who felt threatened by Christianity.  However, since
  18. your reply was addressed to me, I feel it necessary that I respond by email
  19. since this sub-discussion is not germane to the list.

  21. Since you have totally mis-read my background, let me say a little about
  22. myself before I start.  I went to a Catholic grade school and high school
  23. and have recently returned to the Church after a lapse of a few years.  I
  24. consider myself to be a Christian just as much as you do.  However, I do
  25. not feel that this gives me any authority to write all of my moral beliefs
  26. into law.

  28. Right-wing fundamentalism scares me because I do not beleve that
  29. religion and politics should mix to that extent.  Mr. Robertson and
  30. his followers seem (to me at least) to be attempting an establishment
  31. of  a Christian religion for this government, and I believe that
  32. that is a bad idea. Aside from the fact that there is a sizable
  33. non-Christian population, what type of Chriastianity would be
  34. established? Catholic, Protestant, Morman, JW ?  We have gone over
  35. 200 years without the sectarian violence which has plagued Ireland and
  36. I would like to keep it that way.

  38. If parents want to raise their children in a religious manner, that is
  39. what bible-study and C.C.D are for, not the public schools.

  41. Personally, I believe that the social revolution of the sixties has
  42. gone too far in some areas, but the right-wing response would swing
  43. the pendulum too far in the other direction.

  45. With regards to religious rights being threatened, perhaps you could
  46. send some examples, as I haven't seen any.  If you are referring to
  47. the original poster's implicit desire to keep the Jehova Witnesses
  48. from "harassing" him, I believe that the poster was over-reacting and
  49. just politely decline and close the door on them, as this has always
  50. worked for me.
