  14. About 10-12 years ago a group of persons of color took over a large 
  15. abandoned church building in my <inner city) college neighborhood.
  16. They named their church building Shrine of the Black Madonna #10.
  17. They promptly grew very fast, within a few years acquiring several
  18. nearby apt complexes with the names Shrine of the Black Madonna 
  19. #10 Men's Quarters, etc.  They had quite an active neighborhood
  20. 'missionary' effort, handing out tracts and such.

  22. This is a long way of saying that yes I have run into this before.
  23. I ran into one of the  folks from ShrineoftheBlackMadonnaNumber10
  24. outside the local Tarjet distributing literature, and that's
  25. when he told me that Mary was really an Ethiopian, I must 
  26. admit that I couldn't suppress a sad chuckle because I figured that
  27. yet someone else had got themselves a cult scam going.

  29. Sheer speculation starts here:  I don't see how Mary could have been
  30. an Ethiopian given the Hebrew (and some would say God's) obsession
  31. with racial purity.  The geneology almost precludes it, as well.  Not 
  32. to mention that I imagine that Ethiopian Jews  were, ah, rare.
