- All these positive responses are really great. But it's also got
- me thinking again about the most disturbing experience I've had
- when someone came out to me.
-
- A friend was looking really down in the dumps one day and I asked
- him what was wrong. He told me that he'd just ended a long-term
- romantic relationship and was having problems adjusting to life
- without *him*. Then he realized that he'd used a masculine pronoun
- for his lover unintentionally, and a look of terrible fear and
- panic crossed his face. I felt helpless and didn't know what to do
- but put my arms around him and hold him until he recovered his
- composure. I guess that was the right thing to do, 'cause he was
- able to talk a lot more openly and honestly with me after that.
- But, I've never been able to get the picture of his naked fear out
- of my mind. Whatever it is about society which can make a person
- feel like he has to hide that deeply within himself has got to go...
