  18. The radio played part of one of D'Amato's Senate floor speeches.  Here's a
  19. paraphrase:

  21.     Private life is not an issue.  Job performance is the only issue.  I
  22.     know my position is a controversial one.  I support allowing
  23.     homosexuals to join the military.

  25. The commentator said that D'Amato is the only Republican Senator to have come
  26. out in favor of President Clinton's position.  The commentator also said that
  27. Senate Majority Leader Mitchell has told Clinton that he can only guarantee
  28. 30 _Democratic_ senatorial votes in favor of lifting the ban.  On the other
  29. hand, the position in the House was said to be more favorable, with Speaker
  30. Foley strongly supporting Clinton, and the fact of the huge "freshman class"
  31. making it likely that there would be lots of good votes.
