- The radio played part of one of D'Amato's Senate floor speeches. Here's a
- paraphrase:
-
- Private life is not an issue. Job performance is the only issue. I
- know my position is a controversial one. I support allowing
- homosexuals to join the military.
-
- The commentator said that D'Amato is the only Republican Senator to have come
- out in favor of President Clinton's position. The commentator also said that
- Senate Majority Leader Mitchell has told Clinton that he can only guarantee
- 30 _Democratic_ senatorial votes in favor of lifting the ban. On the other
- hand, the position in the House was said to be more favorable, with Speaker
- Foley strongly supporting Clinton, and the fact of the huge "freshman class"
- making it likely that there would be lots of good votes.
