- By popular demand... the text of the De Moss news release concerning
- the "In the Life" spots. My comments follow the second cut-mark.

- STATEMENT BY THE ARTHUR S. DE MOSS FOUNDATION
-
- The Arthur S. De Moss Foundation is a private (501(c)(3))
- philanthropic organization that identifies and addresses some of the
- major concerns within our society.
-
- These efforts consist in large part of educational publications, media
- presentations, and selected grants-in-aide (both in the United States
- and overseas). Currently spots which meet the above criteria are
- appearing on spot and national cable television.
-
- This campaign celebrates life. It deals with family values and treats
- a delicate subject in a kind and gentle way. It seeks to change
- minds, not laws, by getting people to think about a difficult subject
- in a new light.
-
- These spots simply ask the question: What could be more important than
- the right of someone to be born?
-
- Our spots have been created and produced by an ad hoc team
- specifically assembled for this project.
-
- The Foundation has a history of not seeking publicity for itself or
- its associates, but rather of letting its projects speak for
- themselves. In regard to the spots now running, we will continue to
- adhere to that policy.

- "Celebrates life"? Sure... for rural, white, middle class, two
- parents, wife is a homemaker, kid isn't deformed or genetically
- damaged, husband isn't abusive... ie. Beaver's Family.
-
- "Kind and gentle way"? Bull-hockey... "I wasn't born, I was aborted"
- is not such a kind and gentle way. No wonder that particular spot has
- been withdrawn.
-
- "Seeks to change minds, not laws"? Of course presenting one side of
- an issue which currently is being decided in our nation's courts and
- ballots has nothing to do with changing laws... NOT!
-
- "In a new light"? Monosource light.
-
- If I were to decide if the De Moss foundation was 501(c)(3) material,
- I would have to saw that they failed at providing information about
- both sides of the issues and merely presented their own conclusions.
-
- "What could be more important than the right of someone to be born?"
- One biggie would be whether the right of the person carrying the
- unborn to live (in the case of a problem birth) or the right of the
- person to not carry a child that they did not agree to conceive (in
- the case of rape or incest). Or, whether or not the unborn would
- really want a life on the streets or other hardships. One big thing
- that Christians against abortion fail to remember is that these souls
- are not lost forever... all they should be concerned about is the
- people invovled in abortion playing God.
-
- "An ad hoc team specially assembled for this project"? Which I am
- sure consisted of sociologist and psychologist who formed the series
- of ads to attack at a person's moral beliefs. And, they structured
- the ads to slower intensify the guilt and shame... but soon discovered
- that the next "level" was already beyond public tolerance (ie. "I was
- aborted.").
-
- "Not seeking publicity"? Translation is that they don't want to deal
- with the controversy, especially in a similar manner as to how
- Operation Rescue operates.
-
- My opinion about this type of commercial is that it is totally
- unethical use of television. It uses finely formulated messages to
- change minds to a particular point of view. It does not just present
- the issue, but embodies the message of shame to force the change. It
- should be totally removed or regulated.
