- Slumming on late night radio, I just heard a lesbian call in
- to Larry King about the lifting of the ban on gays and lesbians
- in the military. She had an excellent point about how this
- public dialog has the potential to lead to some improved
- understanding between people in general. Maybe it's obvious,
- or maybe it's overly optimistic, but here it is.
-
- Her suggestion was that straight men are (by and large) very
- much aware of how they as straight men treat women. The basis
- of their concerns about gay men is that gay men will treat
- *them* like this, should the status of homosexuals be liberalized.
-
- It was her thought that as the public dialog continues, this
- notion is going to be explored in considerable depth. The
- value of what's going on here is not going to be limited to
- gays and lesbians. Many straight men are going to have to face
- up to some facts about themselves and everyone is going
- to benefit.
-
- Well, I can't seem to express it as well as she did, and
- I'm generalizing far too much about straight men, but
- did feel remarkably good about the observation.
