- And because they are discussed in the Center of Known Gay Universe it
- means these same issues are discussed all over the world?
-
- The problem of domestic violence in same-sex relationships is just now
- getting some coverage in the local press. The only discussions of
- alcoholism (or any type of substance abuse) I see discussed publicly
- are in "recovery center" advertisements in local gay publications.
- Same-sex rape, if you listen to lesbigays or read any local rags,
- apparently doesn't exist or at least does not get reported as such.
-
- I'm glad there are folks in the SF Bay area which "certainly discuss"
- such seemingly invisible issues, but don't put yourself on a pedestal
- because you're so damn progressive. These issues _are_ looked on by
- a large number in our community as "it makes us look bad" issues rather
- than "see, we have the same serious problems as strayt folks" issues.
-
- I live in a part of the country where these same problems, when seen
- from a heterosexual perspective, are still "just not talked about".
- If your average yuppie het couple can't easily admit they've got a
- problem in "polite company", how can your average queer couple?
