- I came out to my mother in 1979 and went through something
- similar. She was hurt and outraged, which led to my being
- hurt and outraged, and the whole thing degenerated into a
- shouting match about Eleanor Roosevelt. (That this happened
- in a very small car at the beginning of an 8-hour drive
- between New York and Virginia really didn't help very much).
-
- We remained alienated, with occasional telephone contact,
- for several years. I can't say that she ever fully got
- used to the idea, but as her concern has faded behind the
- more immediate and pressing events in both our lives and
- we've become rather close. This past Christmas was the
- first time since 1979 that she's actually talked about it
- in a way that indicated that it isn't causing her strife,
- and overall things between us are pretty good. It took a
- long, long time, though.
-
- It's possible, even likely, that you and your parents can
- come to terms. It's been said here before, however, and it
- bears repeating that the safest thing is to develop a
- strong sense of self and of self-worth. Whether or not the
- rift closes, you come away with something very worthwhile.
