  36. That's sophistry in its simplest form.  The value judgments
  37. cannot be bypassed.

  39. The argument by example -- some LGB people have done some
  40. very good things -- is not adequate to secure liberty and
  41. equality for us all.  The society as a collective enterprise
  42. -- taking nothing away from its diversities during or after
  43. the debate -- will have to undertake the enormously
  44. difficult, fractious activity of *not* bypassing the
  45. formation of ethical values.  You have several times
  46. mentioned taking principled positions; *this* principle
  47. underlies all others in our domain of discourse.
