- Let me also point out that there are certain parts of the country in
- which an older woman is essentially unmarriageable, unless she has
- an extremely valued physical appearance. I base this conclusion on
- knowing, in two such geographical areas, middle-aged women who are
- handsome (although not *standardly* beautiful), personable,
- socially skilled, intelligent, well-groomed (all these good things) --
- and yet appear to have resigned themselves, unwillingly, to singleness.
