- b. It depended on the Americans that the Spanish met. The
- Aztecs and Mayans had a legend about a -red-bearded man who
- had created much of the Aztec empire and allied the Aztec
- and Mayan peoples. THis man is represented in stone carvings
- from around 1100 AD in CHi-chenitza (spelling is probably
- wrong) accompanied by a man in 1st century Roman soldier's
- head-dress, and another in Greek soldier's head-dress.
-
- Also, the horse that the conqustadores rode were a new
- "technology" and some say the Aztecs didn't realize man
- and horse were separate.
-
- But, the Aztecs were a minority in their empire, and were
- hated by many of their subject peoples who had to give
- up children to Aztec human sacrifices. These subject
- peoples were eager to rebel at the first sign of Aztec
- weakness.
-
- The Mayans were less an empire than a nation, so there
- was no rebellion. Also, they didn't have much gold,
- so the Spanish didn't push as hard. When the Mayans
- fought back, the Spanish sometimes gave up.
-
- The rest of the Americas were different as well.
- Perhaps you would care to post what you find in your
- college library?
