  22. The Mexican government decided to free all slaves in Mexico. The Anglo
  23. settlers weren't happy and declared independence. In short the only real
  24. motivation for 'independence' was a desire to keep slavery. I have never
  25. seen any other reason cited although usually it is not put so boldly. The
  26. usual practise (from all I have read) is to claim it was 'interference in
  27. American customs and practises' ie slavery. Certainly the freeing of slaves
  28. and the revolt were very close indeed and there was little else to suggest
  29. a reason for the break at that exact time. You have to admire the way that
  30. the issue of slavery is played down in most text books and the euphemisms
  31. used to hide the fact.
