- The Mexican government decided to free all slaves in Mexico. The Anglo
- settlers weren't happy and declared independence. In short the only real
- motivation for 'independence' was a desire to keep slavery. I have never
- seen any other reason cited although usually it is not put so boldly. The
- usual practise (from all I have read) is to claim it was 'interference in
- American customs and practises' ie slavery. Certainly the freeing of slaves
- and the revolt were very close indeed and there was little else to suggest
- a reason for the break at that exact time. You have to admire the way that
- the issue of slavery is played down in most text books and the euphemisms
- used to hide the fact.
