- The most recent Guide in the Dallas Morning News (Friday's edition)
- lists Cafe De Saigon (downtown), East Wind (Deep Ellum), Pho Bang
- (Garland), and Swan's Restaurant (Mesquite). Of these I've only been
- to Pho Bang and I wasn't crazy about it but it has been quite some
- time.
-
- The three Vietnamese restaurants I go to most often are:
-
- Pho Nam - Walnut Street at Plano. All they have is Pho (Vietnamese
- beef noodle soup) and a variety of beverages (coffees, lemonade,
- etc.). You can have your choice of any of 8 cuts of meat, the menu
- lists several popular combinations. Most of my friends like Tai Chin
- (eye of round steak and well-done brisket) ; I like Tai Gau Nam Ve Don
- (eye of round, fat brisket, and skirt flank). I love this place, I
- usually go there once a week.
-
- Saigon Kitchen - Walnut Street at Jupiter. This tiny restaurant
- serves several varieties of soup including the Pho listed above,
- several rice dishes, and the Vietnamese vermicelli dishes (with pork,
- beef, egg roll, etc.). I like the vermicelli with char-broiled pork
- and egg roll. They also have pretty good spring rolls with shrimp and
- pork.
-
- Arc En Ciel - Walnut Street at Jupiter. They have an extensive
- Chinese menu with many interesting dishes (the sizzling tofu platter
- and the lobster baked with cheese come to mind) with one page of
- Vietnamese dishes at the back. Imperial rolls - tiny egg rolls served
- with lettuce, fish sauce, and shredded carrots and cucumbers - are
- delicious (but rather greasy). Good vermicelli dishes and Pho, though
- for these I prefer the above two restaurants.
-
- Other Vietnamese restaurants in this area include:
-
- Pho Bang is also at Walnut Street and Jupiter. They have Pho, spring
- rolls, can't remember what else.
-
- Also at Walnut and Plano is My Tho. I've only been there a couple of
- times and didn't find it memorable, but the did have some baby back
- ribs that were quite good.
-
- Pho Huy, a new Pho restaurant, just opened up on Greenville around
- Beltline (across from First Chinese BBQ). I like Pho Nam better. Pho
- Huy uses bigger noodles and thicker slices of beef; I think the
- thinner slices make the meat more tender, though with the thicker
- slices each cut of meat keeps more of its own flavor (brisket vs.
- steak etc.).
-
- There used to be several Vietnamese restaurants on Bryan near downtown
- (including the ones mentioned in other posts) but I don't know if they
- are still around. I wish there was a fancier Vietnamese place farther
- north, maybe something like what East Wind is supposed to be like.
- The places on Walnut are great for lunch though, fast service and
- reasonable prices.
