- HONG KONG (AP) -- The government today shut down a refugee camp where 24
- Vietnamese were burned to death last year in the worst violence ever at Hong
- Kong's boat people detention centers.
- A government statement said the last 62 Vietnamese at the Shek Kong camp
- were either returned to their Communist homeland this month or transferred to
- other refugee centers.
- The camp, which used to house 8,900 Vietnamese, was rocked by riots last
- February when 300 northern and southern Vietnamese clashed over hot water for
- bathing on the eve of lunar new year celebrations.
- The victims burned to death in a dormitory.
- A large number of Vietnamese were arrested after the violence and 14 of them
- are currently standing trial on charges of murder and rioting.
- Since the Vietnamese boat exodus began in 1975, more than 200,000 have
- landed in Hong Kong. Of these, most have been resettled overseas or
- repatriated, leaving the present 42,000.
- Only those who can prove they face political persecution in Vietnam are
- granted refugee status by the Hong Kong government.
