- I think English as a 2nd language (learned well) should serve communication
- needs within and outside Sri Lanka. As for that 3rd language, I feel that
- "need" should be the driving force rather than some government regulation.
- In my school in Kandy, Tamils learned Sinhala and the Sinhalese learned Tamil.
- The Tamil students did a far better job of learning a third language because
- they could see the need for it.

- As for misunderstandings and problems,
- despite the ease with which Sinhalese and Tamils in my school could talk
- to each other (through English) it was not uncommon to hear racial
- slurs and stereotyping...But I must say that race relations in my school
- were far superior to anything I experienced in other Sri Lankan
- institutions.
