- Peru's First Mother Threatened by Sendero
-
- According to the Peruvian newspaper Expreso, the mother of
- President Alberto Fujimori was the target of an assassination
- plot by the Sendero Luminoso. The paper said the plan was
- discovered a few days ago when the police captured four
- Senderists who had documents in their possession showing that the
- president's mother, who is 80 years old, was being closely
- followed. The newspaper's source was an unidentified high level
- official of the National Anti-Terrorism Office (DINCOTE). The
- sources said the four captured Senderists have committed a number
- of killings and dynamite attacks. The security around Fujimori's
- mother has been tightened. The source also said that in November
- of last year another plot against Fujimori's family had been
- detected when a Sendero leader and some commandos had been
- captured. They were going to use a car-bomb against Fujimori's
- in-laws. (edlp 01/18/93 from EFE)

- Fujimori Denies Another Coup Rumor
-
- President Fujimori denied recent rumors that there is a plot
- afoot for another coup and said the intelligence service would
- verify future reports with the press. Various local newspapers
- said on January 14 that there was a plot among the police force
- because of discontent resulting from lowered salaries. Fujimori
- allegedly discovered a coup plot among the army on November 13 of
- last year. Fujimori criticized the media on January 17, saying
- they were irresponsible. The rumors were also denied by Minister
- of the Interior Juan Briones who called the press "information
- terrorists." Fujimori said his government would nonetheless
- respect the freedom of the press, but opposition leaders accuse
- him of repressing those which express editorial opinions. The
- government has brought charges against two magazine editors and
- jailed a journalist who they accused of terrorism. Meanwhile two
- mayoral candidates were killed by the Sendero Luminoso on January
- 17 as part of a campaign to sabotage the January 29 elections.
