  25. Peru's First Mother Threatened by Sendero

  27. According to the Peruvian newspaper Expreso, the mother of 
  28. President Alberto Fujimori was the target of an assassination 
  29. plot by the Sendero Luminoso. The paper said the plan was 
  30. discovered a few days ago when the police captured four 
  31. Senderists who had documents in their possession showing that the
  32. president's mother, who is 80 years old, was being closely 
  33. followed. The newspaper's source was an unidentified high level 
  34. official of the National Anti-Terrorism Office (DINCOTE). The 
  35. sources said the four captured Senderists have committed a number
  36. of killings and dynamite attacks. The security around Fujimori's 
  37. mother has been tightened. The source also said that in November 
  38. of last year another plot against Fujimori's family had been 
  39. detected when a Sendero leader and some commandos had been 
  40. captured. They were going to use a car-bomb against Fujimori's

  44. Fujimori Denies Another Coup Rumor

  46. President Fujimori denied recent rumors that there is a plot
  47. afoot for another coup and said the intelligence service would 
  48. verify future reports with the press. Various local newspapers 
  49. said on January 14 that there was a plot among the police force 
  50. because of discontent resulting from lowered salaries. Fujimori 
  51. allegedly discovered a coup plot among the army on November 13 of
  52. last year. Fujimori criticized the media on January 17, saying 
  53. they were irresponsible. The rumors were also denied by Minister 
  54. of the Interior Juan Briones who called the press "information 
  55. terrorists." Fujimori said his government would nonetheless 
  56. respect the freedom of the press, but opposition leaders accuse 
  57. him of repressing those which express editorial opinions. The 
  58. government has brought charges against two magazine editors and 
  59. jailed a journalist who they accused of terrorism. Meanwhile two 
  60. mayoral candidates were killed by the Sendero Luminoso on January
  61. 17 as part of a campaign to sabotage the January 29 elections.

  65. Guzman Will Serve Sentence in Underground Prison

  67. Abimael Guzman, head of the Sendero Luminoso, will be 
  68. transferred to an underground prison where he will have no 
  69. physical contact with anyone else, according to a report released
  70. on January 18. The new prison is being built in Callao, near 
  71. Lima. Basic needs, such as meals, will be attended to, but there 
  72. will be minimum contact between prisoners and guards. According 
  73. to the Peruvian newspaper Si, eight such cells are being built. 
  74. There will be minimal space for a bed, a small toilet, and room 
  75. to take a few steps. Guzman and others who are places in the 
  76. cells will not be able to talk to or have any other contact with 
  77. anyone else. After serving the first year of his life 
  78. imprisonment Guzman will be able to have visitors. According to 
  79. the newspaper, Guzman spends his time reading a Bible, walking 
  80. around in his cell, or sometimes he drinks a glass of wine with 
  81. his meal. He is being treated for psoriasis. The cost of keeping 
  82. Guzman in prison is estimated at some $35,000 a month. (edlp
