  27. Pardon me--poor phrasing.  Add the word "retrospectively" to what I said.
  28. (I do consider the German bans on membership in organizations to be
  29. anti-democratic, to say nothing of the 1972 Berufsverbot, btw.)  To
  30. make SS membership illegal *in retrospect* -- after all, nobody
  31. belonged to the SS when the post-war trials happened -- is quite different
  32. from banning an organization *at the time.*
