- >False. The term "Canaanites" literally means people from Canaan (western

- The etymology for Kna`an seems much more complicated. The root
- meaning of Kna`ani seems to be merchant. Kna`an may be a
- back-formation. When Semitic speakers came into the region, they
- asked the local people who they were. The local people designated
- themselves as merchants or Kna`anim. The Semitic speakers then
- concluded that the region must be Kna`an.
-
- A similar confusion occurred when the Portugese first had contact with
- the Chinese through Chinese merchants in the South China seas. The
- Portugese asked their local contacts who they were. The local
- contacts called themselves sengloi or merchants, and for about a
- century and a half the Portugese used a word derived from sengloi to
- mean Chinese.
