- Spike Lee's protrayal of two Jewish club owners,
- in "Mo Better Blues" is an example of negative stereotyping
- that was not only a vile portrayal, but it also flew in the
- face of the truth of Jews and their involvement in the
- history of jazz in America.
-
- I believe it also flies in the face of Spike Lee's own experience.
- I seem to remember seeing an article in a magazine or newspaper that
- quoted Spike Lee as saying that he had positive relationships with
- Jewish entertainment promoters in his youth or in his lifetime. (As
- you can see I do not remember this very well.)
-
- But his rationale for the characters is that there are bad people among
- all groups, including Jews, and that his characters are not intended as
- representatives of all Jews or stereotypes. In other words, they are
- bad individuals, not typical Jews.
-
- My father, though, picked up on anti-Jewish stereotyping long ago. He
- pointed out to me that whenever there is a scene in a movie depicting a
- family celebration, such as a wedding or engagement party, that Jews
- always have the short, fat, and funny-looking relatives, whereas WASPS
- always have tall, slender, and distinguished-looking relatives. A good
- example of this is a movie from the seventies called
- _The_Heartbreak_Kid. The movie opens with a Jewish wedding and closes
- with a mainstream WASP wedding. The difference between the guests at
- the two parties is quite obvious.
