- >I am glad Akebono became yokozuna.
- Me too!
-
- >There was one thing that bothered me. When Akebono pushed Takahanada
- >out, in the back was a wildly cheering Japanese lady ... probably in
- >her 50's. But when they panned out for a shot of the entire arena,
- >it was really quiet.
-
- Sorry to contradict you on this one, but NO IT WASN'T - I was
- there, for one, and making a hell of a noise! So was everyone else
- around where I was (13th row, 2nd floor, North Side).
-
- >Was I witnessing sour-grapes from Takahanada fans and pro-Japan fans?
-
- To be honest, I was surprised by the amount of support Akebono had
- in this fight. Within my auditory range the Akenbono shouters
- outnumbered the Tak supporters by (I would guess) at least 5:1.
- There were even several young Japanese girls, who I had down as
- definite Tak supporters, who were shouting for Akebono (just goes
- to show something about apperances and misconceptions!!). I
- suspect that something that was happening was that everyone was
- stunned it was all over so fast. We had been waiting all day for the
- fight, hoping maybe for a play-off (better value for money!-there
- was only one lower division play-off, and we had missed out on the
- definite possibility of a Juryo playoff, with Asanowaka and Asanonami + 1 other going into the final day all with 4 losses)
- and then it was over REAL fast.
-
- >I bet had Takahanada won, the place would have been roaring.
-
- Well, yes, but so would I - because of the 3 way play-off, if nothing
- else!
-
- >Sumo fans in Japan, tell us.
-
- Hope that helps! - I managed to go 5 times this basho, and so
- thinkl I class as a fan (also, if you get Sumo World, take a look at the photo between the Mak. and Juryo Banzukes - I'm one of those
- people!!)
