Cable & Wireless has a significant investment in the Pacific Rim. With its
partner Standard Telephone COmpany (STC) of UK, it laid the PhilSin
(Phil-Singapore) and OLUHO (Okinawa-Luzon-Hongkong) submarine cable.
Eastern Telecoms controlled by BAN group (Benedicto, Africa and Nieto) is
the C&W Phil affiliate and member of the submarine cable consortium.
During the Marcos era, C&W and Eastern Telecoms basically monopolized the
Phil-Pacific Rim data and voice telecommunication.
With the downfall of Marcos, I believe Eastern Telecoms reverts to its core
business which is data telecommunication services. At this point in time
I don't believe C&W is a major player in the Phil telecommunication
