- made a lot of comments and questions about my post,
- <1993Jan26.110215.4287@arizona.edu>, which was clearly an exact, although
- unauthorized, copy from an article in Aviation Week & Space Technology,
- Jan. 18, 1993. The article was copied in toto and as exact as my typos
- allowed. As for the credibility of the magazine, I have already clarified
- the situation in another post. Suffice to say, any magazine that has a
- political stance has a credibility problem, but it is as authoritative as
- any magazine in this technical field.
-
- Now a little technical detail from me, and I assume the responsiblity of
- any error. In the article:
- > Sources told Aviation Week the accident occurred when the Chinese-
- >built 4.2-meter-dia. (13.8 ft.) nose cone shroud covering the satellite
- >broke up while the vehicle was reaching supersonic velocity at about
- >23,000 ft., 45 sec. after liftoff.
- > This is the ascent regime, when the greatest aerodynamic pressure and
- >structural loading--Max Q--are exerted on the booster.
-
- In general, Max Q does not happen at high supersonic velocity and in fact
- at e.g. Mach 2, the nose cone shroud experiences lower aerodynamic pressure
- than at Mach 1 because the bow shock is largely oblique and, at the same
- time, the vehicle is at a higher altitude where the density is lower.
- Max Q usually occurs when the speed is almost Mach 1 and a detached normal
- shock forms in front of the nose. The pressure ratio rise is large from the
- normal shock and the free stream dynamic pressure is significant due to the
- higher air density at lower altitude.
-
- Finally a word about accuracy. I believe the statement that China has
- thousands of Mach 2.X supersonic planes is inaccurate. From all the
- authoritative sources I have come across, the total production of all
- Chinese aircraft capable of flying faster than Mach 2 cannot be
- more than 2 thousands (in fact, might not be even a thousand). I would
- like to see any source that contradicts this.
