- EIGSE NA LAOI '93
-
- The Music Department and the Traditional Music Society of University College,
- Cork, Ireland will be organising the third of five international traditional
- music festivals under the title of Eigse Na Laoi on February 18-21, 1993.
- Following on from the success of the last two years which have focussed on the
- Fiddle Music of the Shetland Isles (Fiddlesticks, '91) and Irish Music from
- America (Dear Old Erins Isle, '92), the theme of the 1993 festival is The
- Traditional Music and Dance of Cape Breton Island. In 1994 and '95 the themes
- of the festival will be respectively, Irish Music from England, and The Irish
- Musical Diaspora which will link in with the theme of U.C.C.'s 150th
- anniversary celebrations. Since 1991 the festival has been expanding beyond
- the boundaries of U.C.C. and has not alone made a lasting impact on the
- traditional music scene in Cork City, but its unique nature has ensured it a
- high national and even international profile. One of the most important
- factors in this has been the release and worldwide distribution af a CD
- recording of the festival each year by Nimbus Records (U.K.). The CD of the
- February 1992 festival (Dear Old Erin's Isle) has just been released to rave
- reviews and Nimbus Records are fully committed to recording the next three
- festivals.
-
- The traditional music of the inhabitants of Western Scotland who were driven
- out during the infamous Highland Clearances in the 18th Century, has been
- preserved and enriched in a unique way in Cape Breton, a small island off the
- east coast of Canada. While there are not many direct links between Cape
- Breton and Ireland, they both share, to varying degrees, a close affinity with
- the music of Scotland, and in recent years musical contacts between the two
- islands have been very much on the increase. The idea of this festival will be
- to recognise the existing musical links and to foster a higher level of
- communication between the two cultures. The festival will feature the music of
- fifteen of the leading fiddlers, pipers, piano players, singers and dancers
- from the island:
-
- Harvey Beaton - dancer
- Hilda Chiasson - piano
- Dwayne Cote - fiddle
- Goiridh Domhnallach - singer
- Jerry Holland - fiddle
- Dougie MacDonald - fiddle
- Howie MacDonald (t.b.c.) - fiddle, piano
- Jamie MacInnis - pipes
- Dave MacIsaac - guitar, fiddle
- Carl MacKenzie - fiddle
- Buddy Macmaster - fiddle
- Natalie Macmaster - fiddle, dancing
- Paul MacNeill - pipes
- John Morris Rankin (t.b.c.) - piano, fiddle
- Brenda Stubbert - fiddle, piano, dancing
-
- The weekend will follow a similar format to previous years. The main concert
- of the weekend featuring all the Cape Breton guests will be on Friday night in
- the Aula Maxima of U.C.C. There will be lunchtime recitals in the Triskel Arts
- Centre on Friday and Saturday and there will again be a series of late-night
- ceilis and sessions. A major innovation with this year's festival will be a
- special emphasis on dancing. The set dances of Cape Breton have retained a
- very important place in their tradition so we have invited a very highly
- respected dancer/dance teacher, Harvey Beaton, who as well as performing
- himself will conduct a series of set dance workshops during the Saturday of the
- festival. We will then be holding a major night of Irish and Cape Breton set
- dancing and music in Cork's City Hall. This will feature a selection of the
- best Irish dance musicians along with our Cape Breton musicians and some very
- special guests.
-
- We feel that this very exciting line-up will ensure that the 1993 Eigse na Laoi
- will be an even greater success than previous years.
-
- If you would like any additional information about the festival please contact
- the Music Department in University College, Cork, Ireland.

-
- There is just one Irish Traditional Music List
-
- Its name is IRTRAD-L (Apologies for the references to IR-TRAD) and it is on
- LISTSERV@IRLEARN
-
- Much of the confusion resulted because we originally set the list up on
- MAILSERV. (Also we are relatively new to the whole area of e-mail and made a
- few mistakes along the way). However it has been recently switched to
- LISTSERV. The MAILSERV list is no longer in existence. We are currently
- transferring MAILSERV subscribers over to the LISTSERV list.
-
-
- To subscribe to the list you type the following:
-
- SEND LISTSERV@IRLEARN SUBSCRIBE IRTRAD-L your full name
-
-
- To signoff the list you type
-
- SEND LISTSERV@IRLEARN SIGNOFF IRTRAD-L
-
-
- IRTRAD-L is a moderated list (although it seems to be have been operating as an
- unmoderated list up to now - we are rectifying that)
- The moderators are
- Hammy Hamilton: ARMU6001@IRUCCVAX
- and
- Paul McGettrick: ARAR6013@IRUCCVAX
-
- Issue No.2 of IRTRAD-L will be sent out on Monday January 25th.
- Thanks to those subscribers who have sent in contributions to the list. These
- will appear in the Jan. 25th issue.
-
- Thank you sincerely for your patience. The list should be operating smoothly
- very shortly.
- Paul McGettrick
