- I recently got my 'Gleaner' so I thought I would elaborate a bit on the above
- subject for those who don't have access to one. The following are excerpts
- from the Weekly Gleaner of Jan. 18.
-
- Two Quake Deaths Recorded
- "Henry Cargil ,22,( no, not Morris..) was walking with friends along a cliff
- in the parish of Portland when the quake struck, loosening the rocks causing
- him to fall into the sea and drown.
-
- "An elderly woman died of shock after the quake.
-
- "Minor Damages to Buildings
- 1. The UDC Bldg. was badly damaged
- 2. There are cracks in the roadway approaching the Causeway from Marcus
- Garvey Drive.
- 3. Landslides in the vicinity of Cement Corporation.
- 4. Walls and Roofs cracked or badly damaged in Meadowbrook Estate and in
- Woodford Park, East Kingston.
- 6. Buildings at the UWI Campus at Mona damaged and occupants had to be
- evacuated.
- 7. Downtown Kingston area and the eastern section of the island appear to
- have felt the bulk of the shocks.
-
- "A History of Quakes In Jamaica
- "Jamaicans on Wednesday, Jan. 13, launched a day early into Earthquake
- "Awareness Day which was to have been (observed) by the Office of Disaster
- Preparednes when an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck the
- island lasting for 15 sec.
-
- "Here are the dates and happenings of some of the major earthquakes to have
- struck the island since the 17th century:
-
- * June 7, 1692, the city of Port Royal was destroyed by and earthquake.
- Sections of the town sank into the sea.
-
- (At the time Port Royal was reputed to be the wickedest city on earth. I can't
- remember the name of the man who was swollowed up by a crack in the ground and
- later 'spat' out again).
-
- * Jan. 14, marks the 86 year since 'the great 1907 earthquake struck the
- island leaving over 1,200 persons dead.
-
- * Mar.1, 1957, the heaviest earthquake in fifty years sturck the city of
- Kingston. (7.28 on the Richter Scale).
-
- * On May 9, 1988, at 11.24 a.m., an earthquake lasting 90 seconds was felt
- in Jamaica. No one died but, a young girl in fright jumped through a
- schoolwindow and broke her leg."
