- Thus sayeth l_kaonga@unhh.unh.edu:
-
- warning: most of the names below may be spelled wrong...
-
- Nigeria - a dusk to dawn curfew is in effect in the northern Nigerian
- town/region of Puntwa. There was some violence in Katsina
- and the local ruler's residence, the local police station,
- and a Nitel (Telecom Nigeria) installation were destroyed or
- heavily damaged.
-
- the violence apparently started when students at two koranic
- schools started fighting...the reason for the fighting is not
- clear at this point.
-
- Togo - there was a kidnap attempt by Togolese (police?) aligned with
- General Eyadema on Bishop Kodjo...the bishop's residence has now
- been barricaded and it is being heavily guarded...and I believe
- General Eyadema or some official of his may have apologized for
- the mischief.
-
- South Africa - Two mini buses carrying police opened fire at a group/crowd
- of boys standing outside some commercial area in Thokoza yesterday
- and one boy was shot to death (shot in the back according to an eye
- witness). There was more troble today but the details were sketchy.
-
- Malawi - The Malawi News Agency, Mana, seems to be in deep trouble with the
- government for the way it seems to have suddenly aligned itself with
- opposition groups in the country... Mana is a government-run news
- agency and the government is upset with Mana's report of the
- opposition rally and other recent meetings...the government is even
- complaining that at the same time that the opposition was holding the
- rally, the ruling Malawi Congress Party was also holding its own
- meetings which Mana apparently completely ignored to say something
- about. The government is now claiming that Mana has been infiltrated
- by the opposition and a witch hunt may be underway to flush out those
- scribes who're responsible for the bad verse, in the govt's opinion.
-
- Meanwhile,
-
- Zambia - The trade union council, which President F. Chiluba used to chair
- before he run for president, is quite upset with the Zambian
- government's decision to buy 60 new mercedes benz luxury cars to
- replace the fleet of toyota cars the government is currently using.
- the leader of the trade union says that with the economy in shambles,
- and roads, even the ones in the capital, Lusaka, full of potholes and
- the fact that the government ordered a salaries freeze, it does not
- make too much sense for the government to buy these cars. According
- to the trade union, there is nothing wrong with the cars currently in
- use by government officials and it would have been more useful to
- invest the money in improving the country's infrastructure.
