- If you're asking for a free/shareware replacement for KanjiTalk, I think
- you're out
- of luck. The only way to use Japanese on a Macintosh without using
- KanjiTalk is SweetJAM, an extension that works in the English MacOS to
- provide Japanese in a few programs, like Microsoft Word. SweetJAM isn't
- cheap, though, and it's never worked well for me.
-
- The question of a word processor is completely separated from questions
- about KanjiTalk. KanjiTalk is the operating system and provides the
- romaji->kana->kanji conversion. The word processors take advantage of
- this, but they don't do it themselves. The best Japanese word processor
- for the Mac (in my opinion) is SoloWriter. It gives you many advanced
- functions and page layout capabilities. Since you're on a budget, I'd
- recommend ASLEdit+, miniWriter, YooEdit, or any other free/shareware
- editor you can find. Most of these are available on
- ftp.uwtc.washington.edu, although that site will be down for a couple
- more days.
