- Well, birch itself might be what you're looking for. I generally use red oak
- myself, but I may not be as picky as some people. I'd get some sample pieces
- of birch and try some different trim pieces. One thing to keep in mind is
- that birch ply is rather difficult to stain evenly. If I want to stain
- something like birch or pine I usually use one of the Watco colored oil
- finishes rather than a conventional stain. If I then want a glossier finish
- I'll apply a polyurethane over the Watco. There's also a method of mixing a
- bit of varnish with stain to stain these woods evenly. I don't recall the
- technique exactly, but I'd be glad to look it up for you.
