- You really don't have anything to lose by trying it. I have had fair
- success with a technique of applying a layer or two of thin varnish and
- "feathering" it into the old, unsanded area. I sometimes use what's called
- a "dry brush" technique for the actual feathering; sometimes I use a paper
- towel. I use this mainly for varnishing the areas in moulding that get
- sanded when I fill nail holes.

- The water heater blew in my parents house one year, soaking and expanding
- the oak flooring in the hall outside its cubbyhole. It took over a year,
- but the boards gradually flattened back out.
