- The number that Don Burns gave is the Windtalker at Ed Levin Park in the
- San Francisco Bay Area. This Windtalker was designed and built by
- Wayne Ashby of the Wings of Rogallo. This unit has pretty archaic voice
- generation, but reports most useful information. Wayne eventually sold
- (I think) this design to Litek Instruments in Oregon (503-479-6633, Chuck
- Kanavle). The Litek version of this Windtalker, the Windtalker I, had
- been installed at Fort Funston for years, and had continual problems,
- mostly due to the severe weather at the coast. I volunteered to take a
- look, and after seeing the poor quality, recommended that the Fellow
- Feathers purchase a new Windtalker II.
-
- The Windtalker II has a much improved female voice, and additional but
- unused features. After about a year, the Windtalker II started to have
- some problems. It was returned for repair once, and now has been
- disconnected for an extended period of time.
-
- My personal opinion is that these units are probably pretty reliable. I'm
- just not sure why Funston continues to have problems with it. The
- Windtalker II is professionally done with no shoddy workmanship, and a
- tremendous improvement over the Windtalker I. I do know that Litek sells
- nationwide and this instrument is used a lot by the windsurfer crowd.
-
- Litek is now selling the Windtalker III. I don't know what the differences
- are.
