  25. PALPlus is widescreen version of PAL. It was created initially so that
  26. terrestial broadcasters could transmit widescreen broadcasts, because the D2MAC
  27. bandwidth is too large to be used terrestially.

  29. PalPlus is compatible with existing PAL television sets and the newer 16:9
  30.  
  31. If a 4:3 set receives a PalPlus signal it will display it in letterbox The new
  32. 16:9 sets will display the full widescreen image. It uses digital signals which 
  33. are embedded in the black bars to improve the picture quality.

  35. Unfortunately present video recorders cant handle the high frequency digital
  36. helper signals. I think they are working on a modified SVHS  system.

  38. it is hoped that PALplus broadcasts can begin in the Autumn of '95.
