- You are going to see a certain amount of distortion on any set, unfortunately.
- Generally, the bigger the set (direct view) the greater the amount of
- distortion.
-
- I find that the Sonys are easier to adjust to an "acceptable" amount of
- distortion. The Panasonic GAOOs are very difficult and involve taking off
- the back of the set and twiddling controls that are mere millimetres from
- high voltage components.
-
- If fact, on my 31" GAOO it is impossible to remove the pincushion distortion
- along the horizontal axis at the bottom of the screen. The keystone cannot be
- adjusted so that the vertical lines are exactly 90 degrees from the horizontal
- ones. If I put a test pattern on my set, vertical lines tend to bow to the
- right when looking from bottom to top. This set also has a really bad case
- of "blooming" (the picture grows as the scene gets brighter (it's really
- annoying during scenes involving explosions)), as do all GAOOs that I've seen.
- If my GAOO ever dies, I'm not spending the money to get it fixed...
-
- The service manual for the GAOOs is laughable. "Adjust color temperature
- until whites have a 'warm' appearance." "Adjust keystone until vertical
- lines are reasonably 90 degrees from horizontal." Almost all adjustments
- are done by eye. What's wrong - are service technicians too stupid to use
- appropriate test equipment?
-
- A suprising thing... the new JVCs have next to no geometric distortion and
- no blooming and have reasonable colour. However, their pictures seem to
- be grainer than others. Maybe I'll buy a JVC 37" direct view next time.
-

-
- When I complained about the distortion and blooming in my set, the
- "technician (ha!)" that came to look at the set was a real winner (sarcasm).
- This guy's tool kit was pathetic - a few worn out screwdrivers
- (all magnetized!) and a pair of pliers. He had to use _my_ tools to
- get the back of the set off and to make some of the internal adjustments.
- His conclusion - "No fault found." Argh!
