- >Here's some questions I'd like to have answered about the Photo CD...
-
- Okay...
- >
- >How many pictures can be put on a single CD?
-
- Over 100. The actual amount depends on how many sessions (times you send the
- CD in for additions) are used. If all images are written in a single session,
- abou 118-120 images will fit.>
- >
- >What does it cost to get x number of pictures "developed" and how
- >long does it take to process it? Can you take them to your local
- >drug store or do you have the mail the film in yourself?
-
- The cost will vary from finisher to finisher. The costs will also depend on if
- you are putting the whole roll on at the time of processing or for "reprints".
-
- Turn around time is dependant on the finisher as well, but will only likely
- take a day longer than normal if at all.
-
- Many of your normal photo finishers now have PhotoCD capability. KodaLux has
- them in their plant, and I beleive that a net favorite, Dale Photo, also have
- the system online. If you are happy with your present photo finisher, check
- with them.
- >
- >From the television commercials, they always show the Photos on the
- >television set ... so, the pictures are stored with MUCH more
- >resolution than that of a standard television set?
-
- Yes...and no. Every frame is recorded onto the PhotoCD in five files. The
- standard image is a 1MB file that is shown on your TV (you should know that is
- plenty of information). In addition, there is a 4MB and a 16MB file for
- computer and printing purposes. The last two files are around 400k and 100k
- files. The 400k file is good for interactive media purposes, and the 100k
- file is only good as a thumbnail.
-
- So why five files? It is designed this way to take the stress off of the end
- product. You would not want your PhotoCD player to be processing 16MB files
- down to video quality every time you wanted to look at a new picture. the
- advantages of pre-processing the image at the CD Workstation (driven by a Sparc
- Station) far outweigh the extra space taken up by a few extra files.
-
- For the Pro Photographers, be looking out for new advances in the Pro PhotoCD
- system. Films up to 4x5 will be scanned like the 35mm now available (I don't
- yet have info on files...ask me after PMA) Also, the portfolio CD will be
- capable of holding over 600 images on a single disk.
-
- Hope I didn't over-answer your question...
