- hi,
- do the experts out there know the explanation to this phenomenon:
- We all know how things sound when listening to them through a long
- metal pipe, right? Even through a long concrete pipe.
- The sound has a very characteristic 'sound'.
- Sometimes movies on TV has this sound. It is highly annoying.
- I used to think it had to do with the stereo sound not being in phase
- on the transmitting end (so that I would have to reconnect my speakers
- to an out-of-phase config to compensate), but no that's not it.
- The distortion of the sound is much more severe than what you can
- produce by playing music out of phase.
-
- just in case anybody got an idea...
-
- On my local stations, this effect (which I hate) is caused by a stupid
- stereo sound simulator unit that the stations use to "enhance" mono
- programs. This unit uses a comb-filter effect to spread the sound out
- from the center. It is not a simple reversed phase in one channel or
- something similar that would be easy to get around. The only thing you
- can do is set your tv (or vcr) to mono and send a nasty letter to the
- station telling them to quit using their stupid stereo enhancer box.
