- Hi Florence,
-
- I travelled in Vietnam last month. The trains were (relatively, of course)
- expensive--I paid about $100-120 US (I can't remember exactly) to travel
- from Saigon to Hanoi. I usually travelled with a hard-sleeper, but prices
- vary for soft-seats, hard-seats, soft-sleepers.
-
- Accomodation cost about $5-10(US) a night. In Hanoi though, accomodation
- was especially scarce, and we spent one night in a $30 (US) room because
- we were unable to find anything cheaper.
-
- I got my visa in Bangkok for $60(US). In many countries, the Vietnamese
- embassy doesn't issue visas to travellers, but they can refer you to
- travel agencies who are able to do this. Shop around, I met two people
- who got their visas in Australia--one paid $150 A, the other paid $25 A.
-
- Many travellers who arrived in Hanoi had stories of officials who wanted
- bribes ($10-30 US) before they would let them pass. I met only a few
- travellers
- with similar experience who arrived in Saigon.
-
- When you travel to Vietnam, I recommend you bring US travellers
- cheques, and some US cash as well:
- .) most banks cannot convert any other currency
- .) since most banks cannot give you US cash for your cheques, it is wise to
- bring some of your own
- .) there are 10,000 dong to the US dollar, or a MILLION dong to $100 (US).
- The common denomitions are 2000d and 5000d notes, so if you cash a
- $100 cheque, you finish up with a 3-4 inch stack of dong. It is
- definitely space-saving to carry money in US dollars, as the rail
- and hotels accept (in fact prefer) US cash.
-
- Other: To spend a night in a city other than those marked as entry/exit
- points on your visa, you need a travel permit. While you can arrange
- it yourself, there are several cafes which will do it for you for
- $1 (plus the $19 fee for the permit itself), and who will also
- provide advice as to what to put on your permit. The $1 fee is well
- worth it. The Darling cafe in Hanoi, and Kim's and Sinh's cafes in
- Saigon provide this service. The Darling is about 5-10 minutes walk
- North-West of Hoan Kiem Lake--if you walk around that area, you're sure
- to run into other travellers who can direct you; Sinh's and Kim's
- cafes are both up the road from the Prince and the Vien Dong hotel.
- All these cafes also run cheap transportation and guided day tours
- to places that are otherwise hard to reach on your own.
-
- Enjoy your trip!
