- I sent the following text by email to someone, and thought it
- might be useful to others:
-
- - I think the Ganga is most interesting upstream of Haridwar. Beyond
- that she loses very little height till the oceon. At the very start,
- when she is Alaknanda and Bhagirathi, she is terribly beautiful.
- - Your focus on Garwhal is very sound.
- One of the India's greatest wildlife parks is there -- Corbett
- National park. Closeby Himachal Pradesh is another nice state from
- which to access the Himalayas.
- - Kashmir is not a good place to visit given the religious nuts.
- Just check if you can fly into Ladakh. It is a peaceful group of
- Buddhists and some of the craziest terrain in the world (all > 18k feet).
- - One of my favourite quaint cities is Jodhpur. Further to the west
- Jaisalmer is very interesting. Both these are routinely visited
- by westerners, so it may not be bad.
- - Bombay is the hotbed of commerce. If you want to see the vibrant
- economy of a new India, this is the place. The stock market may
- be of interest. South of Bombay are a collection of some great
- and undiscovered beaches (south of Alibag actually).
- - Based in Bombay, you can access the Sahyadris, a small but interesting
- range of mountains with a lot of history in them. I've hiked in them
- extensively, but never seen westerners in them -- so the information
- needed to hike in them may not be readily accessible to you.
- - New Delhi is a British-built town. You can smell the Mughal
- empire in Old Delhi if you have read enough history.
- - In general, south of Bombay, things are much better by way of lawlessness.
- - I've travelled a lot in Kerala and love it. Good places to visit
- are Kovalam beach, Periyar wildlife sanctuary and Kodaikanal. Badrinath
- sanctuary is said to be good too, but I've not been there yet.
