- G'day
-
- I was in central Australia three weeks ago, and I went from Ayer's Rock
- to Kings Canyon and then to Alice Springs. You will have to go through around
- 100 km of dirt road wherever you are coming from. A four wheel drive is not
- necessary if the road is dry. Actually, even with a four wheel drive, it is
- not recommended to drive through dirt roads after rain, you damage them a lot,
- and the chance to get bogged is very high. The last 100 kms or so are sealed
- but I found that the dirt road was in poor condition. It is very corrogated
- due to the large number of tourist coaches passing through. I will suggest
- you to carry more than one spare wheel if you want to go there with your own
- car. Loose stones on the road may puncture a tyre easily. Carry enough water
- (at least 10 litres) because your engine may overheat. You will find petrol on
- the Stuart Highway and in Kings Canyon. There are quite a lot of cars passing
- through that road, and I don't think it is necessary to advise the police.
- In remote areas, everybody will stop if you have any trouble.
- If you plan to rent a car, I don't know if they will let you go through unless
- it is a four wheel drive. There are tours going from Alice or Ayer's Rock to
- Kings Canyon.
-
- As Sue was pointing out in the last post. It is advisable to check the roads
- condition at the local police station before starting your trip.
-
- It's a really nice place to see. There is a very good waterhole where you can
- have a swim after walking a couple of hours.
