- Sadly, the BBC world service reports that Tanzania have withdrawn from
- Africa's Group H. They have sited financial constraints as the reason
- for withdrawal. The results of their previous matches will be
- nullified. The revised Group H now looks like:
-
- Africa Group H P W D L F A Pts
- Madagascar 3 3 0 0 6 0 6
- Zambia 2 1 0 1 4 2 2
- Namibia 3 0 0 3 0 8 0
-
- 9 Oct Madagascar 3 - 0 Namibia
- 25 Oct Namibia 0 - 4 Zambia
- 20 Dec Madagascar 2 - 0 Zambia
- 17 Jan Namibia 0 - 1 Madagascar
-
- Zambia will have to come up with 2 impressive home wins over Namibia
- and Madagascar in order to take top spot in this group.
-
- The withdrawal of 11 African teams is quite depressing. Would the
- African qualifying zone be better served if they set up a series of
- tournaments in some of the more economically/politically stable
- countries along the same lines as in Asia. The teams would have reduced
- travel costs and presumably (if the tournaments are properly marketed)
- would receive increased revenues by sharing in the greater gate
- receipts. European based players would have a greater chance of being
- released from club commitments if it was for a pre-determined 2-3 week
- period. The drawback of course is not having the support of your home
- fans for half of your games. However, I think that I would rather have
- my country play in a foreign locale and have the chance to advance than
- play at home and be forced to withdraw because of politics/economics.
