- Since the Blues contact already posted the summary, I'll just throw
- in a couple notes....
-
- First, the big fight: Cummins and Chase went at it, and Cummins was led
- to the penalty box, while Chase remained on the ice. As a result, the
- Wings were outnumbered on the ice. Probert was double-teamed 3 times
- during this brawl...first, while he was pounding on Chase, Dave Lowry
- jumped in. Probert got loose from Chase and it was just him and Lowry.
- Lowry looked like he wanted no part of this match, and just tried to cover
- as Probert got in a series of punches. Rick Zombo attempted to come to the
- rescue, and was quickly seperated by Brad McCrimmon. Probert did land one
- good punch on Zombo and then went back to Lowry. Bob Bassen then came in
- to help Lowry. Tim Cheveldae came in to help, but was met by Curtis Joseph.
- That's when Cummins came back on the ice. He will likely get a 10 game
- suspension for his effort...the big question is what will Bryan Murray get?
- According to the rule book as it stands, he would get a 10 game suspension
- also. Remember last year that a similiar instance occurred in with Yves
- Racine came back out of the penalty box...Murray received 5 games for that
- and the rule states that if the same things happens again within the next
- three years, the suspension is doubled for the coach. Murray said that at
- the GMs meeting it was agreed that the rule wasn't fair because a coach can't
- control a player who is in the penalty box, but he's not sure if it's changed
- or not.
- Also, a question for you rules buffs: Can there be more than one 3rd man
- in? Zombo got the game misconduct for 3rd man in, Lowry and Probert got
- game misconducts for fighting after another fight, but Bassen got no penalty.
-
- It was a well played game by the Wings. Sheldon Kennedy played on a line
- with Fedorov and Ysebaert and the line was Detroit's best of the night.
- The Wings outshot St. Louis 42-21, but Curtis Joseph was outstanding in the
- net.
-
- MISC:
- -Chaisson (hamstring), Drake (kneecap), and Sillinger (Coaches decision)
- were out. Primeau, Cummins, and Howe joined the lineup.
- -On the 3rd St. Louis goal, replays showed the Blues were clearly offside.
- Mickey Redmond was saying it as the play developed.
- -Classic ending: With less than a minute to play, the Wings put on a
- furious attack to try to tie the game. Replays of one attempt showed
- Garth Butcher holding two Wings sticks, and another Blue (who was penalized)
- jumping on the back of Steve Yzerman.
- -Cheveldae stayed in the entire game, despite having a swullen eye that
- seemed to be very close to being closed. He admitted to not being 100%,
- but Murray kept him in.
- -Cheveldae needs one more win to tie him with Jimmy Rutherford for 5th place
- in number of victories in a career with Detroit.
