- I do not claim to know very muc about Indian cricket, but I went to watch
- the Indians at Newlands when they played South Africa -- both ODI and the
- test.
-
- What struck me most about Tendulkar was his performance on the field, not
- his batting. He has an assertive personality, and obviously THINKS. More
- than once he would go over to Azhar with a suggestion about a fielding
- position or bowling tactic. As evidence of his cricketing intelligence,
- he showed a willingness to change his bowling style to suit the situation.
- In the ODI's he bowled gentle inswingers. During the tests he alternated
- between off- and leg-breaks, depending on who the other bowler was.
-
- I agree that he seems young to lead a side, but our own Hansie Cronje (22)
- and Jonty Rhodes (22?) are only a few years older, and both captain their
- provincial teams (Malcolm Marshall says that Rhodes is the best captain he's
- had since Clive Lloyd).
-
- Azhar lacks assertiveness on the field, and the killer instinct.
-
- Tendulkar would bring the creativity of youth, and with his enthusiasm (like
- Rhodes and Jadeja) he could help India overcome their biggest weakness : lack
- of commitment and energy in their fielding. He seems to be willing to try
- something different when the game settles into a rut.
-
- Maybe he should be appointed vice-captain under Kapil Dev for a major tour.
- Azhar could then concentrate on his batting.
