  14. FSU defeated Clemson, at Clemson, Wednesday night, 89-71. In a matchup that
  15. put a HUGE Clemson team against a much smaller and lighter Seminole squad,
  16. FSU managed to out rebound the Tigers 40-26. Of all stats in the game, I felt
  17. that this ine was by far the most significant. Clemson had the ability to use
  18. thier size to dominate, but instead yielded to the quicker Noles. FSU's 
  19. guard play was also a signinficant factor in the game. Between Bobby Sura,
  20. Charlie Ward, and Sam Cassell, they hit a combined 13(!) three pointers. That
  21. acounts for 8 more points than Clemson scored in the entire first half (31
  22. for those not good with math ;). With two or so minutes to go in the game,
  23. Kennedy put in the "bench gang" (Lo Hands, and the four freshmen: Robinson,
  24. Carroll, Shepherd, and Kerner) with a 24 point lead. He then got treated to
  25. an exibition of ineptness by freshman point Shepherd, as he made 3 straight
  26. turnovers which lead to easy baskets for the Tigers. Ahh, freshmen. FSU
  27. shot a very nice 53% from the field.

  30. Player Analysis:

  32. Charlie Ward: It looks like Ward has finally gotten back into the swing of
  33.               things. He has started to become much more offense-minded, with
  34.               him scoring a career high 19 points in the game (other reports
  35.               have it at 20...but 19 was the official total). He also had 8
  36.               assists and 3 3-pointers in the game. Ward is, as was pretty
  37.               much expected, served as a calming force for the Noles, and a
  38.               catalyst for both the defense and offense. Ward has gotten
  39.               back to 100% just in time to meet up with Duke. Ward has said
  40.               all year long that the two games he most looked forward to
  41.               were the two meetings with Duke (so he could go up against the
  42.               "best point gaurd in the game"...his words, not mine).

  44. Doug Edwards: Due to the size advantage of Clemson (hell, just about every
  45.               other ACC team), Edwards was not the scoring factor that he can
  46.               be (with a big man on the court...FSU really misses Reid 
  47.               inside). However, he was a major force in FSU's dominance on 
  48.               the boards. I listened to the game on radio, and it seemed like
  49.               almost every time Clemson missed a shot all I heard was, "...
  50.               and Edwards comes down with the rebound!", from one of the more
  51.               annoying announcers: Gene Deckerhoff. I must say, however, that
  52.               I didn't mind hearing those particular words.

  54. Rodney Dobard: Had a shitty night. He had a very poor shooting night, scoring
  55.                only 9 points. He was, however, his usual effective self on
  56.                the defensive side, and in grabbing the rebounds along with
  57.                Edwards. The loss of Reid has forced Dobard to move to the
  58.                center spot which he is 1) not big enough for, and 2) not very
  59.                comfortable with. If Reid was in the lineup, Dobard could go
  60.                back to his normal forward spot, and be more effective.

  62. Bob Sura: Bobby hit 4 "key three pointers" (everyone's fav cliche') in the
  63.           game and scored 19 points...14 of which came in the second half.
  64.           He seems to just keep rolling along.

  66. Sam Cassell: He scored from the paint, he scored from outside, and he scored
  67.              from way deep. All in all, he ended up with 30 points in the 
  68.              game to lead all scorers. He shot a blistering 6-6 from three
  69.              point land, and 12-14 overall from the field. With Carlie Ward
  70.              back at the point guard spot, Cassell has been allowed to go
  71.              back to his game...SCORING. Anyone thinks that the addition of
  72.              Ward back to the team is not significant should take a look at
  73.              what his presence allows...Cassell to score.

  75. Steve Gruhl: Didn't get to play. I was bummed. You would think that with a
  76.              24 point lead Kennedy would give the guy a shot...I bet HE
  77.              wouldn't make 3 consecutive turnovers ;). By the way, Gruhl is
  78.              the only guy on the team to average more points than minutes. :)
