- Welcome to Memorial Gym, Nolan. Vandy rode the stregth of good shooting, good
- rebounding, and a 45-10 edge in free throws attempted in whipping Arkansas
- last night. Nolan Richardson's inaugural at Vandy's gym was short-lived, he
- was thrown out with 16 minutes to go in the second half and Vandy up by 3. By
- the time Arkansas got the ball back, they were down by 10. I think Pitino got
- tossed out in one of his first visits to Mem. Gym also. Arkansas fans should
- be glad Vandy didn't shoot free throws like they did against Kentucky. They
- only hit 30-45 last night. If they'd shot the 80+% like against UK, it would
- have been a big blowout.
-
- Vandy has done the first step in being a contender, won the tough home games.
- Now they've got to do the hard part, picking up the road wins, with 3 of the
- next 4 at Tennessee, Auburn, and Kentucky, with a surprising South Carolina
- team that can't be disregarded coming to Nashville. Vandy's one road game in
- the conference was a close loss to Florida, and they played OK in that one.
- Hopefully McCaffrey's experience at going into hostile gyms in the ACC will
- add something to their road toughness, and perhaps they will continue to
- handle defensive pressure well after the Memphis State debacle.
-
- As to the SEC races, Kentucky has the big edge in the East (Vandy's 4-1
- notwithstanding), while Arkansas and oh I hate to say it, LSU the favorites
- in the West. I don't know how Dale Brown does it, but he's already picked up
- two big road wins at Auburn and Miss. St., and he has Vandy in the Death Dome.
- Kentucky has also picked up road wins at Georgia and Alabama. Vandy on the
- other hand, has still got to do it. Florida really shot themselves in the foot
- with their home loss to South Carolina. If Vandy can get by their next three
- before going to Lexington, Cinderella will still have a chance. We shall
- see.
