- CHARLESTON SHOCKS TECH [Saturday, Jan 16]
-
- [Verbatim from Durham Herald-Sun]
-
- They knew they had a chance after coming so close a year ago.
-
- College of Charleston atoned for a failed upset bid by
- recording one of the biggest of the season Saturday night,
- an 84-67 victory over #8 Georgia Tech -- the team that
- knocked Duke from the #1 spot last Sunday, snapping the
- Devils 23 game winning streak.
-
- "I just asked them to do two things, play their hearts out
- and let it all hang out," Cougars coach John Kresse said.
- "Last year we scared them. And this year we didn't fold in
- the last seven or eight minutes."
-
- It was a devastating loss for Tech coach Bobby Cremins, who took
- the blame. "I take full responsibility. We just were not ready
- to play and it was obvious we were not. So I apologize to our
- fans, and I'm embarrassed, but life must go on."
-
- Marion Busby scored 29 points and Patrick King added 20 as Charleston
- (8-2) shot 59% from the field and never trailed in the second half.
-
- Tech, which lost to #5 North Carolina on Wednesday, dropped its
- second in a row. The Yellow Jackets were hurt by poor FG shooting
- - 41% - and even worse FT shooting - 37.5%.
-
- Charleston, which moved up to NCAA Division I last season and went
- 19-8, lost at Tech 77-70 last season. The Cougars, 1983 NAIA champs,
- are in their first season in the TAAC (Trans America Athletic Conf).
-
- "We were looking forward to playing here," Busby said. "We came so
- close last year. I had a TO late in that game when they were coming
- back on us and I didn't want to mess up this time."
-
- CHILDRESS, DEACONS RUN BY TERRAPINS [Saturday, Jan 16]
-
- [Condensed from Durham Herald-Sun]
-
- Randolph Childress scored a career high 30 points and played a
- key role in two pivotal runs, one in each half, as Wake Forest
- extended Maryland's [then] losing streak to 4 games Saturday
- night with an 86-74 victory.
-
- Rodney Rogers had 23 points and 10 rebounds to power the Deacons
- to their first ACC victory of the season. Freshman Johnny Rhodes
- scored 21 points and Kevin McLinton has 16 for Maryland.
-
- Maryland led 17-11 when the Deacs went on a 14-0 run, holding
- the Terps scoreles for almost 6 minutes, a stretch that included
- a Maryland technical foul. Wake never trailed after that, though
- Maryland closed the gap to 4 points early in the second half. A
- 9-0 Deacon run put the game virtually out of reach at 50-37 soon
- after.
-
- MARYLAND SURPRISES OKLAHOMA AT BALTIMORE [Tuesday, Jan 19]
-
- In one of their annual trips to Baltimore, a Maryland team stunned
- by 4 ACC losses stunned nationally ranked Oklahoma, 89-78. Maryland,
- under the power of their freshman fast breaks and strength underneath
- of Evers Burns, led at halftime by 6. Baltimore Arena sold out for
- this one, a welcome payoff for the Terrapins, who have been having
- trouble selling tickets in College Park.
-

-
- [Condensed from Durham Herald Sun]
-
- FSU's Bobby Sura scored 23 points in Tallahassee to lead FSU
- to a third straight ACC win against a depleted NC State Wolfpack
- squad. NC State dressed and played 8 players. The Pack outrebounded
- FSU 28-23, but Sura continually "drained the tough shot" according
- to Les Robinson. According to Pat Kennedy, "He's got that confidence
- now". The ACC had better watch out.
-
- Charlie Ward is getting back in the groove, dishing out 10 assists
- in the game. Kevin Thompson was 6-7 for 16 points and had 12 boards
- for the Pack. Edwards had 13 and Dobard 10 for FSU.
